1994/1995 540i

Ok here is the thing. My '95 525ia was a graduation gift from my mother. I like the car and I spent a grand on suspension and tires (I get parts at cost so it was a lot more than you might expect)

The 525 is great and all, but I let mom drive it while i cleaned her '04 Explorer EB. SHE WONT GIVE IT BACK!!!

Said she would buy me another one if she could keep the 525. I was like well it has to be a 530 or 540.

I found a '94 540i, it is loaded, even has traction control.

What do I need to look for with this car? I figure I will have to replace teh CA bushings with 750iL ones, and install some Bils HD.

I think the new engine has like 20k miles on it (replaced due to recall)

Also I guess I will do valve cover gaskets, but what else should i watch for?

I was going to say look out for the Nikasil engine issue but it looks like you have it under control

Seeing that the engine has been replaced rescently, I would consider this a "lucky find" there aren't many 540's on the road these days due to those engine issues.

Check for rust at the bottom of the doors, and check for cracks around the top of the rad.

The engine is probably the biggest issue with those cars, the thrust arms next.. Which you already covered. I can't think of any other things u should look for.

I am still leary about those engines ( even ones that have been fixed)....and I would still stick with a 6 cyl. go for a newer e39 528i, they aren't that much more!!

If you wnat a car to pimp around I would take 95 525 anyday over 540.I think inline6 is the most reliable E34.I kinda agree with Eta85 that those E34 540s are kinda fishy even with the new engine.

everlast, how slower is the 6 speed e34 540 from 6 speed e39 540? just a wonder since we are on the topic?

the e39 540 has much more low end muscle. too bad they had to lower the red line becasue of teh longer stroke.

Well things have changed. I am keeping with the 525i.
