The 17x8 will work for sure, the 16x8 will be a bit tighter against the strut. You might have some issues with the fenders, however if you are rolled you should be fine. With a 16x8 you want to shoot for ET20, but ET23 should work fine, worst case scenario a small 3 mm spacer if it rubs on the inside (strut).

The only catch is these wheels will be on e30 M3 running gear. ET15-25 works brilliantly well on the e30 M3 and I've found ET20-23 best all around, but then with the 318is fenders, I'm not 100% sure how this will work out.

Oh ok, wasn't aware that E30 M3 running gear required a different offset than regular E30's.

I wouldn't worry about the fenders, M3 fenders are boxed out, however they aren't any wider than non-M fenders until you start going up into the fender. Properly rolled and slightly pulled non-M fenders with your stiff suspension setup should be just fine.

Thanks

They will not fit. The front will permanently be rubbing against the liner.

16x8 ET23 w/225/45/16 on an very low 1991 318is?

Trying to work through some new shoe ideas as I plan to swap over the e30 M3 hubs and brakes.
Both of those setups will work flawlessly.

And FWIW, the M3 hubs share identical geometry to non-M. The offsets of one are comparable to the other.

That's good to know. So the challenge is going to be the fenders. Well there's only one way to find out.

That's not Dave's car. That's Alex Schipkov's, finished 2nd in national DSP's last year with this beast:

it looks like i might need a similar ^^ fender job. Just mounted 225/50/16 tires on my 16" rims and i rub the plastic in the front at full lock - and that's at stock ride height!!! Also the fronts are like 3-5mm away from the struts - is it gonna get better when i drop it a bit?
When i drop, i am pretty sure the rear will rub the fender. Who's doing a good job at fender rolling locally? I might need that.

I also noticed a big reduction in acceleration with those

Yeah, Jay said that size would rub. They are an inch taller than stock, so you lose gearing too.

When you lower it, the tire WILL contact the fender. I've seen 225/50/16's ruin E30 bodywork and paint...it's ugly.

^^ that's why i am thinking to put extra padding on the back (to make up for the drop a bit) - i just need the stiffness not the drop at the back really. Front still looks jacked up

Yea those 50's look quite ugly, but for the price i got them for, you'd pick those up too.

They fit quite well.

17x8 ET40 (w/18mm spacers) for a final offset of 22mm.
215/40/17 Falken RT-615

BTW, I have a small but expensive problem with a bent front strut which is why the passenger side caster is a little off right now. It should be corrected within a couple of weeks.

PS - Jay, please remove the photos if they're not appropriate.
