15mm spacers minimum, 20mm to look really good. 225/45/16 tires with either.

Yeah, you could run 235/40/17 on those. Expect to roll both front and rear fender lips, but it'll be an easy fit if you have a stiff enough suspension.

I don't think it'll rub on mikes car while on jack stands in the garage

I've seen 225's on basketweaves, but they sit 5mm further out (offset difference).

In practical terms, there is no 225/60/14 tire that is actually worth anything, ESPECIALLY mounted on a 6" wide rim. If you really want the best traction available while keeping the 14's, get 195/60/14 Falken RT-615's or Hankook Z212 R-S2's. It's the only 14" size they come in, but they'd have wayyyy higher capabilities than any 225/60 you could find.

Well, Rudy was telling me that his wheels are ET18, so no, they will not fit your golf, and spacers will only make it worse. You'd have to machine the mounting face of the wheel to get them to fit.

^^ ya, my rims are ET18, probably will stick out a bit too far... And theres not much material left that you can shave them down

Oh ya, Axxe, its a 7inch rim BTW, not 7.5, sorry for the confusion

For the record: 16x7.5" ET20 with 205/45/16 fits with plenty of room to spare, and looks badass. 225's will not be a problem with this offset.

Yeah.

Here's that exact setup. Borbet 16x7.5" ET20 with 225/45/16 R-S2's:
