noisy rubber?!?
now i know that when you go to a bigger rim and tire , the road noise, between the road and the tire is increased. what i wanna know is how noisy are your tires? is it normal for 235/40/17's to be quite loud?. and how do i fix this problem if i have one. (ie. tire pressure).. thanks guys.
a side note, what tire pressure should i be running on that size tire stated above. thanks again

It all depends on the compound of the tire (harness or softness). I have 18' X 7.5" Yokohama Parada's and they are quiet as hell because they are a soft summer tire. Get some cheap all season tires and then you will notice the noise difference.

I had Toyo Proxy FZ4's wich are the "all season" high performance tire. I don't believe in "all season" tires anymore because you are giving up performance for durablity (not good). It's strictly summer and winter tires from now on for me!

Hrm I've been wondering that question myself, what kind of tire pressures are we suppoesd to be running with bigger rims?? the same as stock? 32 rear 31 front? cuz thats what I'm using.
I've never really had a problem with road noise, even with my crusty winter tires. I guess 5er's are too insulated.

me too
I've got a very similar set-up to you guys. But am always trying to experiment. Not that easy, in my opinion. I'm also running with 235/40/17. I don't find my Kumho's to be noisy at all. But that's all relative. Depends what you're used to.

Just a word of advice, Never buy all season performance tires when you are stepping above a 16" rim. Ever tried to run a 17" rim in the winter on a bimmer. LoL, not fun, it was bad enough with my old 15" alloys with P8000 pirelli all seasons. You just have to get snow tires. As another guy mentioned earlier, you are comprimising the quality, buy a high performance, or ultra high performance tire when you are stepping into that size dimension.
I am running 225/45/ZR17's Sumitomo's HTRZ's and I am so happy. The ride is nice, dry/wet traction is great and there isn't any noise, and I know what you are talking about there Furious325is.
Anyway,
My two cents.
Cheers
Jay

thanks Jay,, i wont be running these rims in the winter, ive got a second set of rims,, and winter/rally tires for the dreaded snow..
i went to wheels direct today to get two new rear tires and the mechanics told me to run these tires at around 37psi. (gamite you should call any local wheel dealer and ask them what you should be running )
