BS, I did mine. You just gotta know what ur doing, you dont just take off and put on, u gotta line shit up or u screw up the timing.
How did you screw up? Try learning from ur mistakes, and u'll get it right, instead of giving up.
Strictly BMW dealer? there are plenty of shops capable of doing a timing belt change on an m20.

Bruno: I thik I saw your old 535i @ Bieri auto....It's advertised as euro 535 with wide grill...Never saw an 535i with wide grill in Canada.
My 535i had only 3 lights and one black grill instead of a high beam on the left.

The timing belt, yes, you need yo know what you are doing, but that doesn't mean that you have to bring the car to the dealership. The only thing I do at the dealership is buy coolant.

535i, no timimg belt....phew.....
