'89 525i M20 broken timing belt (PICS)
Customer with a broken timing belt, see pictures below, the piston #3 hits the exhaust valve pretty bad, bending it (along with two other ones).
With the impact the cylinder head got damaged.
Can you tell the oil change wasn't done frequently, the cam is very worn also.
So check you timing belts if you have a M20 engine.

This is not that bad! I had an M20 (eta) with a broken belt once...where the valve was broken OFF the stem...and the rest were bent...with sevear head and piston damage...
So to all M20 owners: get your belts done on time!

I guess that's the reason they say to change it at every 80,000 kms.

Sorry I have been so busy doing headgaskets on 535i, timing chain on 318i M42 and now this timing belt on the 525i...
I will look into what is available for the Audi.

Any idea how many kms were on it when it broke?
When I did mine the old one looked like it was starting to tear apart, I got to it in time.

How hard is it to do by the way?? How much $$ in parts is it??

Apparently it's a bit of work, and it's usually suggested that since you're there, you may as well change the water-pump...depends on your capability...for me, it's straight to the mechanic for that.

I don't mind the work, I mind the price of parts

Waterpump, thermostat, seals, thermostat housing because it is cracked, distributor cap and rotor, headgasket set + bolts, all the belts, air filter, oil filter, spark plugs, timing belt kit, coolant (BMW) and oil around 760 of parts tax included.
Then you have the used cylinder head cost and the cost to check it out by a reputable shop.
If it was a simple timing belt it would have been 3 hours labour and the timing belt kit: 52.50 Cdn and some coolant (then waterpump, belts...)

Hey Nelsen, if you know what you are doing it isn't that bad, and for all of the parts including the water pump, it's under $100.
