Thinking about buying M5...

ok guys, ive finally decided to sell the 328is and get an ///M car... i was going to go for an E36 M3 ... but i'm sick and tired of modified cars (although ive done it to mine), and i think that's what's going to happen if i get one...

then i considered getting the E46 M3... but they happen to be on the expensive side...

then i noticed that E39 M5's from 2000 are about $30,000 USD each with some 50k miles....

so what are your opinions.. i think the m5 is really classy, and has a nice finesse to it... but gets extremely sporty when you want it to ... additionally i don't want to spend weekends installing modifications..

How's the reliability?

any opinion and info is greatly appreciated...

i've set my goal of buying another car by the end of may

I heard E39 M5's were a hit or miss, you either get one thats rock solid or in the shop every other weekend.

we'll i was assuming you all would say that...

any warnings besides "Warning: Too much fun! or Too many tickets (which i don't care much for)"

for example ... the E36s had horrible water pumps ... i know ... because it went out on mine ... anything like that for the E39 m5?

Never heard of any e36 water pump problems, where did you hear that from?.........replaced mine at 160,000kms as preventative maintenance......

plastic impeller ... it will crack and snap off ... very common on ones that haven't been changed yet (mine went out at 73,000 miles)... the one replaced due to maintenance is one made of a different compound ..

and the plastic hose connection place will snap on the radiator causing the car to spill its fluids all over ... as it happened to my brother the 1st day he got the 328is...

preventative maintenance ... i should practice that more often
