If you're talking things like changing spark plugs, fuel filter, coolant flush then that stuff can be done in the garage. The only things I suggest is to find a write up on what you're doing and have the right tools for the job. There's nothing worse than having to go to Crappy Tire in the middle of the job to get a tool. Ask me how I know

You should also find a mechanic who specializes in BMW's and get to know him. Your costs will be cut in half.

Honestly, it'snot worth going to the dealer, especially when our cars are 13-15 years old.

I have a 92 also and when I first got it 3years ago I asked at the dealer about the services 1&2. For the money they do more checks than putting in parts and not much of either that I could see. I would not go to the dealer find an independant garage or do the work yourself. Save your money.

well, i've already started it myself... i put in 6 new spark plugs, tried out those champions that someone was raving about, i didnt like them, it seemed they hessitated after 4000 rpms, and i was getting a pinging problem on the highway. so i went out and spent big money on bosch +4's (even though most say not too..) and i like them, i can feel the differenc (have a mark-d 94 octane chip installed so maybe it improves that further)

What else should i replace? i am trying to find a good deal on a set of new ignition coils...
