That's not entirely true, your tires will only contract if the air around the tire is warmer than the air within the tire, thus there is more air pressure outside which presses inwards.

However, the air outside of the tire is pretty much the same temperature as the air inside the tire, thus the pressure levels have both dropped at the same rate.

I think most people over inflate just to eliminate flat spots because the tires sit on one spot for an extended period of time.

The times that you would go for a spin you should be rolling your car a couple of feet in the garage so it is not resting on one spot on the tire.
Jackstands are bad because your suspension is now in a un-natural position. When you lower it, it'll actually be weaker than before.

Jackstands allow you to remove your wheels and bag the brakes/calipers against rust. I don't think unloading your suspension can weaken it.
