G'day mate.

I have driven both, and I own an E34 540i6, so I'm well versed in what you're looking for.

Truthfully, the 2.5L in that almost 2-tonne beast is very underpowered, and doesn't make for the most fun of drives, and being an auto is like the straw that broke the camel's back. The later M50-equipped E34 is better, but still lacking. The 3.0L V8 is a great compromise, especially if you need an auto

That small V8 is a great motor, much more power, and it's apparent from any rpm.

Can you drive 5spd? Does a manual interest you?

Just get whichever car you want checked out properly.

Make sure you do a compression test, leakdown test, e-test etc...if everything checks out, then don't be scared by the bigger V8.

Driving an automatic M20, or even M50 in an E34 is a problem.

My new advice would be to just get a 535i(M30)E34.

You have the power of a great big 6, with the reliability of one of the best engines produced.

Thank u all poeple for ur reply but i want to mention here some points to make u guys more clear about my situation. For 535 i think it is my best choice but i don't want to buy a car less than 94 model and uknow that in that from 92 they stop this car. For manual i love it much more than automatic but the problem here in dubai 90% of bmw cars are auto and here no demands for manual cause people here very lazy . Also one point in my heart i would like to have 540 but the problem here for resaling value and petrol ... Last point or before last I want 530 (v8) auto or 525 (m50) auto>>> i want to know how is th reability of 530 (v8) cause as people says here it is a trouble car cause many problem with engine but for me i want it cause better power than 525. Last point if somebody had tested the both cars in auto gear can he explain for me the different in acceleration... thankx alot again for all of my friends ,.... BMW Fans

Okay, before you guys give all this advice, look at his location, "DUBAI" The E34 "Nikal sil" problem was only in North America due to the content in our gas. I don't think dubai has this same problem.

Secondly, the M20 or M50 are quite underpowered for the weight of a big ol E34 (trust me) Sometimes I think my M30 isn't enough.

Thirdly, my final recommendation would be to source out a 540. The 530 is no faster (or slower) than a 535i. the 4L M60 engine in the 540 is much better suited for weight of E34's if you ask me.

The difference between a 525i, and a 540i could easily be 2-3 times the price.

Sure, he should totally go for an E34 540i, but I don't think it was in his price range originally.

They're not that far away from each other actually. He was considering a 530, the price is quite similar to a 540. They ARE older cars, after all.
