too much...not worth it....better find a good used engine, it will cost less, and in most cases last longer then a rebuilt...

How...this is how:
Most places here would charge $2000-$2500 to do an engine like this (almost the price of an M50 swap if you know the rigth people!)
And as much as i respect mechanics here, i still think that German built engines are WAY better...But then again thats just me...I have seen more then one case of a "bad" rebuilt....

I'm with fil. It would cost a crapload of money to get it rebuilt right, which isn't worth it on a ETA. Are you sure that the bottom end is toast? Or is it just the head? Because if it's the head then swap in an "i" head and you'll make some cheap HP.

Never seen a eta blow up before, was it a timming belt issue? If so could probably get away with just a new head. Go Is head and pistons for a nice stroker.

That will decrease compression and horsepower, chances are it is just the head, i used all the main parts from the original bottom because it was like new, all i did was put new rings on and re honed the cylider chambers.
I agree that if your gonna pay someone to rebuild the engine get the 2.5 instead

Woah, nothing wrong with it?! Then do some basic maintenence and don't rod the piss out of her, and she'll last longer than the body. Here's what to do: (everyone else jump in with any other ideas for djtbster
-timing belt, tensioner, water pump (cheap if you DIY)
-fuel filter (very cheap if you DIY)
-cam seal / crank seal if you are leaking oil from the front
-check condition of rad, replace if necessary (you can find one used easy)
-replace rad hoses (stupid thing to fail and can really screw you at the side of the road)
-flush tranny fluid
-inspect brake lines / fuel lines
-replace brake fluid with new fluid, bleed, check rotors / pads while ur there
-change plugs
-inspect wires
-buy haynes manual (cheap), go through each of the steps to check throttle, etc, especially thermotime sensor and cold start valve
Hope this helps!

Yeah, if it still runs just do maintenance. Bimmer motors are bullet proof as long as you do maintenence and don't run boost.

DO the engine swap for an m50, I have an 325e, and there is just to much shit to do for that engine to make it better........Its a low compression engine with lots of tourque but smaller bhp numbers....
