it really depends what kind of rims you are talking about, mine were definitely worth refinishing as its still a lot cheaper than buying a new 1

I think that depends.... imagine at $160 per rim, that $640 for a set + 15% tax = $736.
Assuming you can get $600 for your current M3 rims in the condition that they are in (Im going to guess minor scratches and minimal curbage) and add the $736 you'd spend on refinishing, that adds up to $1336 that you could put towards another set of rims. I know that that money goes a long way in buying used rims (especially in the US right now with the dollar so cheap) so really in the end, are you saving? I think the choice comes down to refinish your current rims vs. buy different & better new/used rims.
according to XE.com, 1336 Cdn. = just under $1100 Usd.
A quick search on Bimmerforums shows that for that price you can get 18" polished BBS RK's, Hamann HM2, ACS Type II 1 piece, and for a little more Fikse FM10's.

i got my breyton magics for a smokin deal in 19inch and they were not perfect so i factored in refinishig from the start. Even with refinishing the set will have cost me below 2g cdn. w/tires. If i were to go purchase thoswe exact same rims again they would cost me probably more than double

I don't think a shop can re-chrome a rim in the GTA(or southern ontario for that matter). I've heard 2 reasons...the first being environmental problems with the electro-dipping process(they all seem to tell me it's illegal and nobody will do it-however I don't know if that holds any truth), and secondly it would cost too much. I had an 18 x 8.5" rim on my old maxima, and it had a little rash, with some of the plating missing around the edges. I called numerous shops, and there wasn't a rim refinisher in southern ontario that would do it...not one. There must be some truth to this, because I had money just waiting to burn on any shop that would do it, but nobody stepped up to the plate. Phone around, I think you'll find the same answer.
I ended up buying another rim for 450 bones.
