Lightbulb O2 sensor pondering

Having talked with a mechanic buddy of mine, I now know that all O2 sensors are the same (for some reason the BMW one more expensive than others). They all have the same thread and calibration. So the smart thing to do would be getting the cheapest O2 sensor you can find for your car (would it be 2, 3, or 4 wire) and just splicing in your BMW connector. I know it works for a fact, cuz thats what my buddy does. So has anyone tried this, or knows otherwise and wants to prove me wrong. I know whats mine next O2 to sensor is going to be - the cheapest one.
