That's not life. I don't think kids are mass murdered daily.

This happens in life, but it's not life.

It's disgusting......

I got home from work and I see my mom crying watching the news. No one deserves to die for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The survivors are now messed up for life. Worse off are those who died.

My prayers go out to those innocently killed and their families.

instead of getting people to understand their cause, they are only encouraging more hatred on them and their people.

This is truly horrible but this is something that cannot be avoided if you live in a place like Russia. If you look at it from the Russian prespective:

The conflict over the region now known as Chechnya has raged intermittently since the mid-18th century. Reports of fighting between czarist Russian forces and Muslim tribes in the region date back as early as 1722. By mid-century, Russian troops had occupied much of the area.

Sheikh Mansur, a Muslim cleric, unified the Chechen army and declared war on the Tzar and his army. He succesfully defeated the Tzar and seen as many as a mythical figure and an inspiration to Chechnyan separatists. In turn, the Tzar dispatched more troops. But by then a new figure emerged, the 'holy man" Imam Shamil. After a while, Russians captured the region in 1859. The tsar quickly sent the rebels out of Chechnya.

Checnya stayed quite calm for a while right up until the Bolshevik Revolution. At that time the rebels rose up again and the Soviets offered an autonomous republic. The chechens joined up with a neighbouring region to create Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

When Joseph Stalin came into power all hell broke loose. Accusing of Chechens to be Pro-Nazi, he deported the entire population (500,000) to Kazahstan. Sources point out that nearly 200,000 died during that time. This date (Feb. 23, 1944) remains a touchstone for the Chechens. After Stalin's death, Soviets eased the restrictions and bought the Chechens back, however they did not allow them to practice their religion.

After the fall of the soviet union, Checnya started an independance movement. These movements were similar to the priror attemts, although this time driven by ending the 150 years of Russian rule, and upholding Islam which was forcibly taken away from them.

It is not difficult to comprehend why these things are taking place. There were a small amount of such attacks in mid - 90s. (I know, I lived through it). But the post-9/11 is a shakey time for such militant groups. These attacks area newfound inspiration for them in the first place. If you remember the seizure of the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow in October 2002, a similar hostage situation took place.

I want to finish off with this quote by Leo Tolstoy:

"No one spoke of hatred for the Russians," he wrote. "The feeling which all Chechens felt, both young and old, was stronger than hatred. It was...such a revulsion, disgust and bewilderment at the senseless cruelty of these beings, that the desire to destroy them, like a desire to destroy rats, poisonous spiders and wolves, was as natural as the instinct for self-preservation."
