Ignition timing

Since there are so many dubbers here, who can help me?

I changed the timing belt on my dad's 91 Jetta. When I put it all back together, the car had even less balls than normal. apparently, I missed the timing mark by one or two teeth on the distributor pulley. The cam is OK ( I can clearly see the timing marks on that).

For now, I just set the timing "by ear" so the car is driveable, but I can't find any ignition timing specs. Can someone guide me please?

When you take off distributor cap,you should be able to see mark on the distributor housing right under ignition wire #1 (it will be small line towards firewall, distributor dust shield may be covering the mark). When you get marks on the crank/cam on TDC. your ignition rotor should be lining up with the mark on the housing (get mark/line on the distributor housing in the middle of the rotor).you can acheive this by pulling distributor and rotating untill you get it.Do that and you should be OK.
