I got a 98 E39 540i Sport with a auto gearbox, I kinda regret getting the auto tranny because when you want to have some fun, you can't, the 540 with auto tranny does 0-100 in 6.2sec, the manual does it in 5.8sec, I get about 500+km per tank(70L) but I drive with a lead foot, what year are you looking for?

I have a 2000 540i6 Sport - no regrets so far. Love the stick, but you need to remove the CDV, put a clutch stop in and change the tranny fluid, after that it is just a tonn of fun. I am a spirited driver and sweep my rear end arround the corners and accelerate hard where I can - though my average fuel consumption is 13L/100Km ... which is amazing... so it is true - you do not have to worry about fuel economy even though it is a 4.4. So basicaly there is one advice from me - get 540 with manual tranny, no matter what year, there are all great.
But if you can get a CPO car - go for it, I did and 2 more years of warranty give me a piece of mind.

e39 definitely

Since your in the U.K. you might want to look into the e39 528i

there are a few performance mods for the 528i which combined with it's better steering feel and 6 vs 8 cylinders make it a very fun to drive car.

The two different steering types on these cars vary substantially and if you haven't done so already, I highly recommend you test drive both.

Raw power and torque, 540i. (leaking valve cover gaskets)
Fun to drive factor and less expensive maintenance, 528i

BTW, do some research on the 530d, I have heard some very good things about it also.... Altho the anti deisels will surely flame me!

Cheers,

Fern

I get 23 mpg combined city/highway with my 6speed. Highway only will score around 35 mpg. IMO, it's not a Honda, but it's pretty good considering the motor size and fun factor.

I've looked at the stuff OS mentions, but I don't feel I need them yet. I can still "get rubber" during powershifts, and I can switch gears smoothly. The CDV does take some getting used to. When I went for test drives before I bought mine, I felt like a complete knob because I couldn't shift smoothly if my life depended on it! I learned about the CDV maybe 3 months after owning the car, but by then, I was able to shift properly.

Get one!!...but start a savings plan ......for REAR TIRES!!! heh heh

the 540 diff doesn't have LSD, one of the next upgrades I'm going to do is buy a used M5 diff, it has LSD & 3.15 gearing

the higher the gearing the faster the 0-60 but you will lose top speed, since I don't need to go over 240km/h everyday I decided to get a higher gearing diff with LSD
