Side-skirt & Bumper painting

Hey everyone...

I need some advice from someone who may have done this before...

I want to paint my side-skirts & bumpers the same color as the rest of my E36 (Silver); so I was probably going to make a trip down to Canadian Tire & get what I need. I have a few questions first though...

1. What is the best type of paint to use on a bumper?
2. What would be the best crit # to sand the bumper with?
3. Should I clearcoat over the paint once I apply it?
4. A friend told me that there was a way to remove the side-skirt paint (apparently it should be silver underneith) - does anyone know the procedure?

1. do not use canadian tire paint.. There is a very good chance it will look horrible.

2. use at least 600 grit (wet sand) or 800 grit (dry) any thing more coarse will show scratches...silver is a royal pain in the ass

3. clear coat is a must..but wait until the paint is dry.

4. I cant help you on that cause im not sure..

P.S, if you try to paint it yourself it most likely will not turn out proper. colour will be off, etc.. What im trying to say is that it will most likely look like dung...Painting cars is not an easy task especially with the paints you will find at a local store. painting things like trim is something you can do at home..but trying to do something like that, I wouldnt recommend..Your best bet is spending a hundred bucks and take it to a body shop. It will save you a lot of grief and headaches.

So are your Side skirts black then?? Are you sure your friend isn't talking about if you take your side skirts off, underneath will be silver???

Thx guys.

The sideskirts are grey - apparently BMW paints it grey after they paint the car - why, I have no idea. Maybe for rocks or something.

i would adivse not doing it yourself unless your feeling lucky..

I got them painted for 350
