Unhappy Clock Issues. HELP!

Alright, on my 318, the little display where it displays the clock/outside temp/date keeps going crazy. The numbers will flash and then tweak out so that it looks like just a bunch of jargon up there. It will keep flipping out like this for a while, then stop, then randomly start again the next day or later that same day.
A friend of mine said his mom had an e30 325 with the same problem, and he said he thinks he remembers there being a quick fix for it; that a mechanic they took it to said he just had to replace a chip or something, but he wasn't sure exactly what.
I don't want to take it somewhere and get screwed over just to get the problem diagnosed. Anyone know what might be wrong?
