Thumbs down E46's are built like BANK VAULTS and why I hate it.

So I bought some new stuff for the E46, to fill in some of the low frequencies that the stock system was lacking. I'm not a cheap guy, so I pick up some solid equipment.

1 x Alpine M350 (Mono D-Class, 350RMS rated, 456RMS tested)
1 x Alpine Type-R 10" (in a sealed enclosure)

So I'm at the shop as they finished up the install. It sounds AMAZING. As he's setting the gain and boost, the entire shop is shaking and everyone inside stops to check it out. Wow, better than I expected. Then he closes the trunk. At first I notice cool, not one rattle, with no dynamat! Then I realize it went completely silent.

He explains to me how well built the E46's are. He compared it to an S-Class structurally. From the front seats, you can't hear or feel any rumble. In the back seat, you feel a small tremble, but it's 1/10th of what it should be. I played with the Amp's settings to try and achieve ANYTHING from the driver's seat, to no avail.

To rememdy this without resorting to 1200+ watts feeding 2 12's, we're likely going to work on cutting into the rear deck and porting the trunk into the cabin. It can be done very cleanly, but I'm just pissed that I actually have to do this. The car has a fixed rear bench (it doesn't fold) and no ski pass through. It's a solid, insulated steel WALL. It looks beefier than the exterior.

Sigh. Ah well, at least tailgate parties will be fun. Like I said, it POUNDS when you open the trunk. Incredible engineering, but bad for trunk setups.

Here's how it looks:

Looks good, thats odd, my moms E46 323i, has a GREAT sounding stock system, shakes all the mirrors no problem, and its not even the HK system!

The bass response is clean and solid, just not powerful enough. Below 100-150hz there really isn't much to work with (5.25" mids can only do so much).

I've already found a link describing how to punch holes in the non-HK trunk. Ehhhxcellent.

I'm a sealed box fanatic. I'd NEVER go bandpass. I would consider a nice tuned ported enclosure for this car though. Screw SQ when you can't even feel the damn thing.

Yeah, it's mom's ride. She's the one that requested "more bass please".

You guys must of had some poorly built (in terms of specs of the subs) bandpass boxes. If done right, it can sound awesome. But thats bandpasses biggest downpoint, it needs to be almost perfect, or it can sound like ass.

Well, I'm happy with mine at least.

WEll my DVC 12's are in a sealed box...........need more power to push sealed boxes

My RF 10's are in an Orion Ported box and I can turn the gains down.......

Depends I have a hatch! So "almost" anything will sound good hence the choice for tha TI gr* for sound! But in Mystikals case you might wanna change that box!
