A thermostat senses engine temp. and controls coolant flow through the radiator. It basically reduces coolant flow when the engine is cold and increases when the engine is hot. When the thermostat is closed, the coolant doesnt circulate through the radiator.....instead it goes around the block, head and intake manifold untill the engine becomes warm opening the thermostat and letting the coolant get to the radiator.
