it's not about how many cars are sold.. it sabout the $ margin. The numbers you want to look at are the BMW Group... (not BMW Brand).

With that said, SickFinga can be right. These numbers are only going back 3 years. (01 to 02... 02 to 03... and 03 to 04)...

as you'll see the 02 to 03 year had the highest sales.
and the past year was still high compared to 2 years ago.

However to analyze marketing trends you need AT LEAST the past 10 years to analyze, and to couple that with other factors such as manufacturing costs, profit margin, and economy.

Im pretty sure that BMW is doing well, REALLY well....Ive seen a quite a few of their new 5ers on the road, and man let me tell you, its amazing..... And justin is right, u need th elast 10+ years to analyze it properly....ahhhh good old business 101

I don't think BMW should make any cars for $20,000. It cheapens the brand. When you say you drive a BMW now, people know it's expensive and its prestigious. If BMW's were as common as Civics, what's the fun?

Spudboy, I'm sorry, upward of $60,000 for a normal coupe is a lot more than $8000 higher than any competing cars...

I'd tend to agree that I would expect BMW to start hurting in sales soon for a number of reasons:

1) The designs are no longer instantly attractive, more of an acquired taste, if at all.
2) The quality of materials on the interiors seems to have dropped off from the early 2000's. Particularily on the 5 series. NO way this car will sell the numbers of the previous version.
3) The are getting more and more expensive. Look at a new 330 or 540. I know image is important, but not when all the other noted factors are thought about.
4) Yes the business is about margins, but think about all the recent factor retooling cost that have to be accounted for. And Cars like the 6 series and the Z8 are very low production cars.
5) I think they have grown too fast, and the lineup of products is starting to get confusing for traditional BMW supporters: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,Z4,Z8,X3,X5 series?? Old represent this, even represent that?
What is the purpose of the X3, no more space than the 330 wagon, and big $, much better vehicles out there.
6) The Z4 numbers must be way down vs the Z3, how many have you actually seen on the road.
7) The 7 series already need redesigning. And is getting a facelift shortly.
8) Even their F1 car looks ugly now.
Okay I may have gotten off topic, and this is a huge rant on BMW now, too bad, as I still love my E30.

Like I said, we shouldn't be paying $20,000 more because it's a BMW.

Honestly, it's a prestigious car, but it's NOT a mercedes... And even then, Mercedes are about the same for paying $$$ for.

Honestly, the 330 is stupid expensive, and not to be rude, but the M3 is the same way. Yes it's a "luxury sportscar" but I still think it's stupid expensive. This is probably why I'm still E30 hunting, beautiful car... The E36s are beautiful too, but the E46 and even the new 5 series are HUGELY "aquired tastes" as addbhp stated...

It'd been a long time since I saw the first photo of the new 5er, just now after seeing one in person numerous times am I actually starting to like the look...
