Before the new definition from Japan, the term was "four-wheel drift" here in North America. In other words none of the wheels (front or back) were congruent to the velocity vector.

It's all about weight transfer. I can sling a FWD car through a bend sideways and keep it there without the use of a handbrake or any modifications to the car, it's just moving the weight off the rear axle and towards the front.

I can get the Mazda sideways through a corner, but its not drifting. To drift you must have power to the rear or all 4 tires.
And a 4 wheel drift is different because all 4 wheels have lost traction and you don't have much control. The Japanese usually have the front wheels in more control and not really sliding...
I won't post anymore in about this...
