A new purchase off Ebay for the e30......
I bought this and think it will look a lot better then the stock e30 valve cover, much more like the new e36 engine covers.
Didn't come with a valve cover gasket, but I am picking one up from Budd's tomorrow for only $24.00

Very nice, I've been eyeing those and the intake manifolds down for a long time now. I think I may just do it myself, those auctions end at some pretty high prices.
Clean it with Simple Green, apply brack wrinkle paint, and voila, you have the look. I'm just too scared to try it.

If this is geared towards me, I would never wash my engine.. All the oil etc, that are on it, provide extra protection, and sometimes when using chemicals it may eat away at gaskets etc, on older vehicles.Ive heard this from some mechanics, and just car guys... Im not 100% positive, but it does make sense to me... One bad thing tho is, all the dirt, etc, are like a layer that provides extra warmth for the engine....something not very good

I agree. It's not a difficult (or expensive) job. Do it. It's worth it. Make sure you get a new gasket and you'll be okay.

OK. Painting the cover is easy but how did you guys sand it so that it looks clean and even. Did you use some sort of wood block etc. under the sandpaper?

I tried with a wood block but I quickly noticed that it was easy to scratch parts of the cover where you don't want to remove the paint...
I changed to a rotary tool (like a Dremel) and it ended up looking great. It's longer but it'll do a much better job.

Thanks Bob, that was exactly the answer I was looking for since I read in many places, people having problems with sanding it properly.
Cheers

it is easier to get a razer blade and peel the paint off for the lines on top of the valve cover then taping it when you paint it too...

No problem, johnoz. Good luck! And post pics after you're done.
