Exhaust Questions ?

I have heard or read somewhere that cars older than 10 years old you can remove the catalytic convertor ? is this true or just a rumour ? because my baffle is loose in my muffler and i need a new muffler so i thought maybe i can remove the cat as well for better exhaust flow ?

Thanks

Mitch

That's definitely not true. Your car has to be classified as a "vintage" car before it's exempted from emissions test. I'm not sure exactly how many years old it must be in order to be a vintage car, but definitely not 10 years. My car is 10 years + old and must still go through emissions testing. Even 15 year old E30's have to do emissions testing, so I'm sure at least 20 years or more.

I think your car has to be from the early '70s for the catalytic converter to be optional. I used to have a '75 Chevy Nova and I got a ticket when I took the catalytic converter out.

But wait, you're from Australia... maybe different rules there?

Ummm, speak for your own province. Here in Ontario as well as Vancouver BC, Quebec we all have emissions testing. I don't know about the rest of the provinces but most likely they have them as well.

Resonators are mainly for sound reduction so whether or not you have a catalytic converter, taking out a resonator will just make it louder and will not have any effect on emission control.

Yeah that sound about correct, because here in Georgai (United States one) its in the 20-25 year range. I have say 4 years left till you all will hear possibly the loudest e30 318i on the street yet, talking ricer territory but less annoying but more frightnening...
