Talking sound upgrade

hey guys

i just bought my very first Beema about a week an a half ago now, and i've been cruizin a few forums mainly checkin out how is the best way to upgrade the sound system.

at the moment i'm thinkin of doin this...
HU: Alpine CDA 9815
Front: Hertz HSK165 or Boston FS60
Subs: ?? 2x 8" in parcel shelf ??
Amp(s): ??

but the questions arise as to what to do with the bass. i've been told that the best way to put bass into an E36 318is is to have two free air subs (8") in the parcel shelf. is this true? sumthin about the boot being too well sealed... this idea sounds good too as i would like to retain as much boot space as possible (for the golf gear!)

neways, i would greatly appreciate any feedback as to what other E36 coupe owners have in their car and any suggestions for an amp (or amps) to run the system above.

cheers
-ash

can your back seats fold down? If so, its not bad putting the subs in the trunk.... but if the seats are up, it really does effect how much bass passes through. At least thats what I find.

yep..... they do (that's the ski hatch... or sumthin, right?). do i have to open the seats up when i want the bass to come through?? or is it the fact that they can come down that makes them permeable to bass?

cheers

Well do your seats fold completely down? or just the middle part? If its just the middle, then thats better than nothing.. and it will allow some more bass to pass through. However, if they folded down completely, that would be ideal. (see pic)

Oh, and you have to open it up... it gets a little annoying, but luckly in the summer I get the garage so I can just leave my seats down

thanx mate,

yeh...they fold completely down. the thing is i dun want to be driving around with the rear seats down!! how much of a difference in sound am i gonna get using say 2 infinite baffle 8" subs in the parcel shelf, to say 2 boxed subs int he boot "with the seats closed"? i'm mainly interested in SQ, clear, "punchy" bass rather than pure SPL, so.......which way would be better?

cheers

sorry, I couldnt tell you really... I'm not sure.

but when u say parcel shelf, do u mean the area under the rear windsheild? Cause I dont know for sure, but my guess is if you put 2 8" subs in there it would rattle like CRAZY. Unless you reinforced it somehow.

ohh.....daymn.....dun want rattles!!
is it easy to re-inforce? i think it'll hafta be a custom installation as the standard pod size is like 4"....will this be enuf?

has anyone with an e36 coupe had experience with subs in the parcel shelf?

I'm not sure how you might reinforce it.... and it would definitely require a good amount custom work, cause like you said, there are only 4" speakers back there now.

I hope someone can shed some more light for you.

The 1st to 5th gear member thing just refers to how many posts you have. I'm not sure how many it takes for each level.

To add a pic to your signature, check this post: http://www.maxbimmer.com/forums/show...&threadid=4810

hmm...

i have an e36 318is... i run a single MTX 12 6000 in a sealed box with 360W RMS running to it, it's pretty loud- with the seats down it is definately louder, but either way it's not too bad.

i get a little rattling from the back, im going to go nuts with dynamat soon.
