Something was off. I've seen so many pics of HID kits in E30's (Ryan Stewart comes to mind, he even has smoked Hella's) and they always come out amazing.

so...xenon,halogen,smiley,projector,ellipsoid,hid. ..whats recomended/preferred?

The reason for that was because the length of the bulb was different than the original 9006 bulb, so the focal point of the filament, or arc in the case of xenon was positioned either too far ahead or to the rear of the housing, and the light was not bouncing off the correct angles.

xenon = hid, projector = ellipsoid.
For an E34, you already have the ellipsoids, so you can just buy an HID kit for your housing. It won't work as well as say OEM xenon's in an E39, but it's the best you can do with that platform, and will be significantly better than halogens.

not all E34's came with elipsoids, 92 and 93 didnt' come with them for some weird reason.
