1979 Euro 525 for winter car?

Greetings all from Nova Scotia.

I have been pondering getting a winter beater, and a 1979 euro 525 just came up for sale nearby.
I was speaking with the guy today and it has 280 000k's, the body is pretty tight with a bit of surface rust. It needs new front pads and they are on the way. Oh it also has a new rad, and alternator.

He is asking 1000 dollars and I am just wondering about what these cars are like?
Im going on sunday to drive the car, and I am wondering what I should look for?
What problems did these car have?
Would this be a fair price?

Bear in mind that I am only looking for a winter car, but I could forsee restoring it, or turning it into a summer race project.

Thanks for all your insight as I am unfamiliar with this model.

Be perpared for a lot of minor repair work.
check out the seats, electrical, air conditioning, shocks, subframe bushings, bearings, control arms, etc, etc.

honestly, the engine will be reliable... its the small things that add up (electrical gremlins, heater, A/C, etc.)

read this: http://www.totalbmwmag.co.uk/Buying/BuyingMay01.pdf

good luck

yes. older e12, e28, etc have a lot of electrical gremlins, that will almost never be fixed...

I just drove it and it feld solid. Everything works on it as far as I can tell. The interior is in rough shape though. the back seat is destroyed and the fronts arent much better. Also the dash is cracked heavily.

There is minor rust, the car works tight but the interor is shat. He wants 1200 dollars. What do you think would be fair to pay? I was thinking of offering him 800 if i decide to get it?

honestly, I wouldnt touch it. Its too old to be reliable and parts aren't cheap and I doubt its worth it to restore.
just my $0.02

Im thinking you might be right miguel. I guess its worth it to just have to do a body job sooner on my 325i knowing the service history and what not. THanks for the opinion. : )
