transmition

ive been told by my mechanic that my transmision is on the verge of dying, and that its just a matter of time... its a 5speed 325ix... he also informed me that a rebuild would be upwards of a couple thousand dollars

so my question is, is there anything specific to this tranny for the 325ix, or would any transmision from an e30 325i engine be able to replace it?
