BMW wants to dethrone Mercedes

BMW would like to be known as the "premium" champ, surpassing Mercedes, as evidenced by the battles for world supremacy and leadership in the U.S. BMW AG said last month that it wants to outsell Mercedes-Benz as the world's top "premium" car builder by 2008. Last year, according to Automotive News (November 3), Mercedes edged out its German archrival by a mere 1.11 million to 1.05 million in global sales, but both producers are increasing their lineups significantly and their sales on totals will rise accordingly throughout the decade.

BMW, longtime second fiddle to Mercedes, is planning to sell 1.4 million vehicles worldwide by 2008, says Michael Ganal, chief of sales and marketing. This will be accomplished by addition of three new series in 2004 - the entry-level 1-Series in Europe and the X3 SUV and 6-Series coupe. For its part, Mercedes has announced plans to sell 1.8 million cars by the end of the decade - 1.5 million Mercedes cars and 300,000 of the mini-compact Smart. BMW doesn't count Smart, which will join the 1-Series as U.S.-bound products in 2005, in its leadership strategizing for luxury brands. Meanwhile, BMW is predicting "the luxury sector will grow 50 percent by 2015," while the vehicle market overall will only increase by 30 percent.

The luxury-model sales war in the U.S. could grow hotter as the main contenders fire off new products in coming years. BMW outsold Mercedes in the January-October period, 226,868 to 178,818, but is being challenged by Lexus, which led BMW, 186,009 to 178,463 at the end of the nine months. Unlike BMW or Mercedes, Lexus has disavowed any move downstream with entries in the 1-Series or Smart bracket, or a separate subcompact brand like the MINI. Thus, BMW and Mercedes will be duking it out themselves for the world crown as premium-car champ. -Mac Gordon

I can't even imagine what 738lb-ft of torque feels like. I mean, I was absolutely amazed at the M5's mere 369.

You are not lookin' at it from the right prespective... It says "Premium" up there... If you look at it from that way, BMW is not beating Mercedes by a mile... Take the S Classe for example;

- it has been the most popular luxury car since 1972
- and %97 of the world's government own an S-Class
- First to use double glazing on a car
- First to use ABS and airbags

BMW intends to sell to a more sporty crowd then a person who is looking for just pure luxury...

If BMW starts to add a little more HP to their entire line-up, which is looks like their starting to do, they will pass MB by a mile, they are already passing them by a quarter of a mile

Caddilac is the first one to use airbags.

ABS, not sure.

Just compare advancement in the peformance.
Mercedes is really far behind.
Luxury, yeah Benz is better.

BTW. BMW is the first car that offerd head side airbags

Top Gear isnt really a reliable source

It is a known fact that American invented airbag and it was first used in a car in 1974.

Volvo was the first car that was offering seatbelts.
