Angry Listen to this BullS^it!!!!!

Okay, I go to volvo today to replace a bulb on the stereo, because the 4,5,6 button light isn't on.....
I go into parts and ask for the bulb and he looks at me and says, you have to replace the whole head unit....I started laughing, I thought he was joking cause he had a smile on his face....Well I quickly learned he was being serious. All the bulbs are sodered (sp?) in and when a bulb goes out, the whole unit has to be replaced. What a bunch of crap, that is the gayest thing I have ever heard of. I can understand with an aftermarket deck, but this is Bull Shit!

Take it to an actual car audio store and see what they have to say about it. Dealerships don't like to carry the smallest pieces sometimes like bulbs for inside the head units. They just say forget it, we'll just sell them a new head unit cuz we don't wanna carry those stupid pieces.

woohoo my headunit bulbs have yet to burn out and I have about 122,000kms on mine

I never knew that you'd have to replace the whole unit but if your headunit looks the same as mine, look on each side of the unit and you'll see these vertical tabs. Push it in and the tabs should retract out and pull out the whole headunit. I never tried taking the whole unit out but maybe by doing that you can see if the whole unit really needs replacing or that you can take the unit apart and replace the 4,5,6 button bulbs.

Dealerships dont under any curcomstances want to open products made by other companies especially since they are mechanics and not electricians. If anything they can take your radio and send it to the manufacture. That's what my buddy had to do with his Volvo S70 T5.

notice the tab to the left of the Bass adjustment lever. That's the one you want to push out on each side and then pull the unit out.

Yep, I know how it works, I am going to try that today, just haven't had a chance yet. Our other volvo 1997 850 wagon, bought brand new and sold in three years with 245,000kms never had an interior bulb burn out once, this one blows bulbs like it is no tommorrow....

frig man, just bring it to my house, I'll solder it in for ya and smoke you up too! (yeah I love working with electronics THAT much! )

I just like to prevent people from getting ripped off, that's all; it's a pet peeve or something for me.

Thanks DJ Contra, the car is actually sold though, so I don't really care about it to much, I just thought it was ridiculous that they suggested I buy a new head unit.

Gamite, luckily mine is actually on the three of the six preset buttons, not on the LCD screen......That must suck for you though...
