Just to add to what Randy said....
The engine forces the wheels to slow down a lot, enough to break the tires traction and cause them to skid, think of what would happen if your hand brake was attached to the front wheels instead of the rear. Most road have a crown, which the center of the street is higher then the shoulders, so in a misshift the front of the car would slide to the right off the road.
Shifting into too low of a gear is one of the many ways I use to initiate a slide when playing on snow/ice when in my truck, like if I want to drift around a bend at like 50, I'll just release the clutch at idle quickly in 2nd to get the back end out, the quickly shift into 3rd and modulate the accelerator. The hand brake in my truck doesn;t work right, which is why I shift to slide.
