Not true. The motronic cars need the crank angle sensor for spark advance/retard.
Non-motronic cars have a TDC sensor connected to pins 8 (P+) and 10 (P-) , which like KC Ron Carter said, is for diagnostic purposes.
Are you talking about the sensor in the motronic gearbox? If so I know second hand here in New Zealand the part was $50 dollars.. roughly $30 american.
