I dont fully agree with that because the dealer is there for one reason ONLY; to make money! Private sales are dont for many reasons (sometimes to get ride of a lemon, i admit) but there are a lot of honest people that just buy a new car and want to get ride of the old one! Ask Terry, the guy that sold him the car spent almost $700 doning the bakes the day before he sold him the car! Two days ago i got a winer beater for a friend and person selling it told me everything that was wrong with the car, showed me all the records of work done, i got him to drop the price in half!!! ($500 for a 93 Subaru 4WD!!!)....

Its true, the guy spent 700$ on a full brake job, and 600$ on tires just a few months prior to that, and told me everything that was wrong w/ the car(not much at all other than some rust), and had all the recepits to prove everything! He had just bought a different car! So sometimes, it works both ways. For example, my dad bought his Volvo from a dealer, and the guy was very honest with us with regards to everything!Nothing else came up, other than the normal maintenance! I think it really comes down on the person/people selling the car!

Remember that night at woodbine and 16th? Didn't you have to go home early because your water pump was failing?

I talked to Charlie and he worked on Terry's car many times when the previous owner owned it. Charlie said it was very well taken care of with the exception of the rust like you said.

Anyways, there is no real way to tell whether or not your buying a lemon. Chances are if you pay top dollar for a car, you'll get what you pay for. That's not saying there aren't cars out there selling for a lot of money that aren't lemons. But come on, 2-5K E36's? I think there's more than just a missing headlight or seat.

Last year I checked out more than 20 E36's for sale around the GTA. I couldn't believe how many of them had rusts on them or were obvious accident coverups. I bought my car from a dealer, but you can always negotiate the price with them. They are more flexable. I made him an offer, and when he said no we walked away, right at that moment he said ok fine. A year and a half later only fixed Alternator, belts and AC fluid top off. You'd be surprized at the price difference for rust vs. no rust. My car barely had any rust on it and I was willing to fork out some extra money for it.

I would say that a fuel pump going, not water pump, CAN be expected on any car with 260K's!
