What are you looking to get out of it, parts car? Can't get a '92 318 for $5500 unless it's be totally wrecked, has close to 300,000km or has been rusted out. I found a '94 318 with perfect body and suspension and only 130,000km. However, the engine needs a complete rebuild. If you don't mind forking out 2-3K it would be a great car and great shape.

Exactly, not everyone has a car shop to restore cars. I would never buy any E36 under $8000 unless I was expecting to buy a lemon.

Thats why car dealers are making good $$$$!!!! They buy a cheap car, fix it, and sell it for a BIG profit! You cant just judge the car because of a low price! There are a LOT of good car with small problems that can be fixed for next to nothing. For example a few years ago my friend got an Integra (that was 1 or 2 years old) with broken ingintion and stolen seats (obviously theft recovery car) for $11G's! Put new ignition for $200, used seats for $800 and he had a perfect car that otherwise sells for $20000+....So what is wrong with that?!

Your not always that lucky either. Not every problem can be inspected in a few hours of just driving the car around. After you purchase the car many things can go wrong. I just wouldn't take the chance. For a few G's more you can get a really decent car. And most of the cheaper E36's, although nothing mechanically wrong, are really badly rusted, bubbling.

But my point is that you can get a BAD car from a dealer also, even tho you pay a lot of money! Thats why they are in this business, to make money! A lot of the dealer cars are from auctions, accident cars etc...and they dont tell you S#%T!!! My firends cousin just got a Sunfire (from a big car dealer) and when she got it checked out by a mechanic it turns out the car had major bodywork done to it...which the dealer "forgot" to mention at the time...

I agree with that, but actually I was referring to private sales in general. Unless the person is desperate (leaving the country or something) it's a safe bet there's probably something wrong with it.
