well.. here is my situation, I had a e36 325is, but it was a major lemon so I had to get rid of it, I always wanted to go ful race with it, but it was my only car so I couldn't.. well anyways I sold it and bought a 1997 VW GTi 2.0 (had to keep it euro ) But I really miss my bimmer.. its just not the same.. and I could probably pick up a 318is a lot cheaper, and since I want to go race with it anyways and will have to take out the block.. might as well get as cheap as I can off the bat so I dont waste money... so yes.. it would be a e36 318is. I would like to do the m50sb32 with a obd-1 conversion..

are you aware that the S designation is for EURO motors...US m3 is M52B32...

firs the S50B30 post...the S50/M50 engines are all OBD1, M52/S52 was OBD2...

M52B30, M52B32 - US M3 3.0/M3 3.2 engine

S50B30, S52B32 - EURO M3 3.0/3.2 engine

S means euro..also new M3 has S because NA and europe share the same engine...its only the exhaust/ecu that are different for emissions

so S54B32 is E46 M3 and is used everywhere...in the US they say S52 for M3 motor because they dont get euro engines, its only for convience...but it is wrong.

i understood that the s was the m3 motor, but apparently its the EURO m3 motor. way to get technical

then a lot of ppl who i just thought swapped in m3 motors, apparently swapped euros!

COOL!

Holy Incorrect Information!

E46 Lover--- US M3 motors are designated S50/S52. Don't believe it? Go find an 86mm or 86.3mm piston out of a 3.0 or 3.2 US M3 engine....It will say "S50 B30" ('95 3.0) stamped in large letters on the top of the piston, along with the bore size and compression ratio.

We refer to the US S50 engines as the single-throttle, and the Euro motor as the 6-throttle.

Jason-- You can drop a '95 M3 motor in your E36 318is easily. You can even retain your transmission and driveshaft. The tranny is the same one used in 325i's and can handle the torque-load of the 3liter with no sweat. You may want to swap out your small-case 3.45 diff for an M3 limited slip though. You'll need to get an entire 3.0L M3 motor, wiring, ECU, accessories, manifolds, exhaust, etc.

You can do a 3.2L motor, if you convert it to OBD-1.

For the record---I am NOT selling my car. I am fond of E36 M3's, and may pick one up down the road, but the E30 is not for sale.

E30Stu- Thanks for posting up the correct info. Poor guy would be paying shipping charges from Germany before he knew it.

For the record- if you can afford to bring in an S50B30, do it. I have driven a 94 M3 with this engine and you'd be very pleased with it. The trottle response is incredible, even compared to the almighty S14.
An NA S50, S52 will also be quite an engine in your car. Regardless the ultimate is the 91 to 94 M5 engine. If you can get a hold of one they are very comon swaps for racer's. The same person I know with the 94 M3 had a stroked (to 4.0L) M5 engine producing 400 Hp. If you're interested the price is around $20,000. He is local in Toronto.
