Question Should I switch from synthetic to Regular blend?

My e36 has 168,000kms and for the past couple of oil changes I have been using Mobil 1 Syntec (Synthetic Blend) 20W50 and have been very happy with Mobil 1.

My car is getting on in the KM's department and I know higher mileage engines usually use regular blend oil. I have to do another oil change soon and just wanted some input.

I am leaning to put more Mobil 1 Syntec back in......
Past: 1998 323is (E36)
1986 325e (E30)

Present: 1997 Jetta GLX VR6

Just watch the oil level. I’ve heard it’s not good to switch to synthetic oil once the car has higher km. The car may consume oil if you switch to synthetic.

Case and point. I know a car that as driven mostly on the highway. At around 130,000 KM, they switched to synthetic. After that, the oil level starting dropping over the 5000KM interval (no blue smoke or anything… but it was consuming more oil). After switching back to regular oil, everything was fine.

I think there was someone on this board that had a similar problem.

Many mechanics don’t recommend switching to synthetic after the car has higher km on it (100K+).

A good regular oil every 4000-5000 KM will go a long way.

Anyway, if you’re going to use synthetic oil, watch the oil level more closely.

I have heard the same things as dtthiaga, but I think Jay's question is whether to switch from semi-syn to regular.

The theory behind NOT switching from regular to synthetic is that synthetic flows better and all, and is adept at dislodging bits of sludge and seeping past old seals. Regular oil, will keep those sealing bits of sludge in place and will keep the leaks away. Or something like that.

For your situation, staying with semi-syn shouldn't be a problem. I think.
