How much would an engine swap be ?

How much you guys think it would be to drop an 325 engine '92-'95 (M50) in a 318is '94 ? Engine and labor

I've asked this question on dtm power but it didn't help me much because in the USA, BMW engines are less rare and the prices are in US $$, I want to know in canada how much it goes for.

I'm asking this question, because I'm shopping for a car (325i or is '92 and up) and I saw that 318is with high miles, but with and swap it would be the car I want. I know I should directly get a 325 and save the swap but I can't find any manuals 325. It's seems to be either a engine swap or a tranny conversion.

Hope to hear from you guys !

Remeber, engines are not the only thing that wear out over time. Any sort of joints and moving components do. I would go with the 325i. Toronto isn't that far, you should consider taking a trip. I can drive it in 4 or 4 1/2 hours...

If you really shop for a good engine with half decent mileage on it I would say around the $5000 to $6000 range (canadian).

I think at the end, it will cost me more to convert a 318 to a 325 engine than buying a 325 !

I think Montronix does it for 6000.

Search the archive, there should be a thread with a bunch of prices.

It wasn't too long ago

I saw a 98 m3 motor and tranny for sale somewhere at an auto wreckers in T.O. they were asking like 4500 or 5500, one of the two, I can't remember exactly. They claimed It had 115k.

I got prices for insurance for each, it's difference is suprising !

266$/month for the 318
382$/month for the 325

prices including taxes

I think for the difference it would be better to buy a 318 swap an engine in it. 116 $ more in my pocket every month for mods that's around 1400$ per year !

What do you guys think ??

This is the problem... You're 318i transmission will not bolt up to the M50 motor. This means that you need to get an M50 motor complete with tranny AND drive shaft too (probably differencial because of the 318i ratio). That means for parts alone, you're looking at about $4000.00. The install will probably be in the neighbourhood of $1700.00. So my guess would be just under $6000.00 and maybe you can sell you M42 for $1000.00 to offset the overall cost. Motronix will do this.

Actually the tranny should bolt right up. 318,320,325 use the same(more or less) S5D 250G tranny.

There are a couple of guys in States with 328, 330, 332 ti's who just swapped the engines and left the original 318 tranny in the cars.
