answer to #2 is 4
4 + 1/4 = 4.25 divide that by 2 to get the average, and you get 2.125 which is equal to 17/8

how about this one.... Should be a bit easier....
The altitude(height) of a triangle is 3cm. more than its base. What are the dimensions if the area of the triangle is 29cm.
???????????????

Triangle question:
Area of triangle = 0.5*b*h
Let base = x
Therefore height = x + 3
Using area formula
29 = 0.5 * (x) * (x + 3)
Solve for x using quadratic equation.
Take the positive value, that is your base. The height is base + 3.
I got 6.26 for the base and 9.26 for the height.
=================
Lawn question:
Area of lawn = 60 * 80
Area of lawn = 4800 sq. metres.
One boy wants half - so 2400 sq. metres.
It's easier to do the question if you draw a diagram.
Let x be the unknown width.
2*(80x) + 2[(60 - 2x)*x] = 2400
Solve using quadratic equation or by factoring. Pick the answer that makes the most sense.
I got 10 metres wide.
