ALMS changed their rules this season regarding cars and production numbers, basically porsche told them to penalize BMW for racing a non production based engine and ALMS listened because almost all the cars raced are porsches. Basically they made the M3GTR non competitive by giving it a 100kg or so weight penalty and very small intake restrictors. But I have a feeling BMW will be back next season.
The only good thing to come from this decision is that BMW has a great ad in the newest Car and Driver. The top half of the page shows the M3GTR going around corner and says "2001: We rewrite the history books," then the bottom half shows the same corner, but no car and says "2002: They rewrite the rule book."
