Key broke... no spare

Hey guys,

I just very recently picked up a little project of an E30. All was going well till I tried opening the driver's side door yesterday and the key just broke.. half the key is stuck in the lock cylinder. I'm wondering what my best options are for getting a new key set for the car are. I called BMW and they can order via the VIN but it's gonna cost $100 ! Is there anyway I can go about getting a key when i have no spare to copy?

Thanks

Junkyard??? Try one of the sponsors here.

Get a whole set from the donor car.

Dealer is probably your only option unless you wanted to change all your locks.

E30 keys could have been cut for under $10 and saved you all the trouble.

Don't be surprised if the VIN# key you order doesn't fit. I ran into that problem last Spring, ended up ordering a blank that cost $60!

A full set of locks is likely the best option. As a bonus you get to clean and lubricate the locks so they will function nicely.

depending on where it broke take it to a key maker and he can put it back together and cut it if he has an old key cutter. had mine brake in half and he fixed it.

Do E30's have power door locks? I think it's time to get an aftermarket kit....
