Can't say enough good things about the E82, if you haven't test driven one you should before you pick up a 330i.
Yeah.... no.

Good luck finding a 530i with sport/m-tech package in decent shape without rust! I tried for close to a year. Although, I excluded black and silver cars, which are 90% of them haha, so you might have a chance. I'd definitely go for one of the M-tech ones (2003 only I think) and in general 2001-2003 only so you get the facelift.

You could get a sport (non m) and change the bumpers

The ONLY e39 that I would consider is the 540 or M5. I've now owned the 540 touring for over 2 years and have had no problems. I find keyboard warriors who have never owned a 540 are the ones stating to not buy one. Everyone who I know who has one including myself swear by them. I tried the 6cyl's before I bought the v8 as everyone was trying to scare me away from the V8 but after driving them all the V8 had me at hello. That said, I bought mine with 177000km on it and it now has over 210000 in about 2 years and aside from routine maintenance it is amazing. My wife drives it as her daily but I have tracked it and it has no problem running down e36 M3s on track. Ours is a touring M sport.

So, against some advice I went and looked at a 540 today-- couldn't pass up this one...

'02 M-sport 540i/6 silver on black 215xxxkm. Cert and etested, with winter rims/tires asking 6800$
No accidents, lease vehicle initially

Few dead pixels, some stone chips and curb rash. Engine looks immaculate, noted new rad hoses and some others.

If I do go the v8 route, I've looked into the timing chain guides and such... Kinda scary. Obviously I'd get a bunch of maintenance done first.... Ill have to sleep on it.

Very nice! Congratulations.... Did you buy it?

My ex 540 went 300k on original guides so don't sweat it.

Not yet... Trying to "play it cool" and not rush into anything

That said, talking myself out of it is hard... There aren't many comparable 330/530 sports in that price range right now.

Good to hear some people haven't had issues, the guides are really what's scaring me away right now

Nice ride!!! Too bad regarding the diff.... I don't think that's a "traditional" E39 issue.
