Suddenly lost power

I don't seem to have the usual power anymore. Even when flooring it, it just gradually revs up in every gear (manual transmission)...it is picking up speed slowly but that power just isn't there. Feels like a 50 HP car now...

There are no engine lights or anything.
So any ideas what it can be? What can I check?

Thanks

Is the top end power still there? If VANOS isn't working properly, it takes away a lot of the low-mid range torque, but the high-rpm power is only slightly reduced. The engine is still smooth and not stuttering?

Get the codes pulled with a BMW-specific scanner before doing anything else.

The engine is still smooth and not stuttering at all. There is a clear loss of power in the low-mid range...I'll check the higher range and let you know.

Is the VANOS known to fail?
Can having too much engine oil cause this? I topped up engine oil and didn't properly ensure it was at correct level.

The engine light is NOT on so I doubt there's any codes but I'll check anyway.

afaik when the vanos fails it usually loses low end power, not top end, so could be vanos. also check:

maf

fuel pressure

plugs (unlikely if not missing)

You may need a clutch. Since you are in Mississauga, take it somewhere where it can get diagnosed properly. Techmax on Tomken Rd. and Meyerside does my work when it's over my head.
