Well they have a few hours in it. The cost of the engine is only one thing.
There has to be 40 hours in it regardless who does it

Budget minimum 10k to do it RIGHT. You can take some shortcuts to save a few bucks here and there but not worth it imo. This is not a budget swap. Do it once, do it right.

That was just a guess... but 60 seconds of google searching found:

$3.5k http://www.scda1.com/blogs/bd/2014/0...d-S54-engines/

Last year:
$3k shipped http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=982984
$3.3k http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...Mint-92k-Miles

I'd say it's definitely possible find a decent S54 for $3k or pretty close to it if you're patient.

Yup. Not to mention shipping that via freight, and duties, etc etc.

I've yet to see a complete S54 with all accessories and wiring for less than $6K locally.

2 out of the 3 I listed came with all of the wiring and pretty much all of the accessories.

Where it's located is also besides the point, it's just to show that there are S54s out there in the $3k range, but if you actually looked at the links I posted you'd see that the one was in Calgary, so there'd be no duties and the shipping would only be a couple hundred dollars. Even if you had to ship it and pay duties it'd still be way cheaper than paying $6k locally.

Whatever, this is getting off topic. I guess the point I'm trying to make to the OP is to do his due diligence. There are documented E36 S54 swaps out there. Read them. Do the research to find out what the parts cost and how much work is involved. That way when you talk to a shop about doing the swap you'll have a rough idea of what it should cost and you'll be able to tell if the shop's estimate is reasonable or not.

Is that LABOUR only , or does that include the engine too.
In effect, the price would be Engine+~5 labour/extra parts...

This is labour + engine + parts. The only thing Stancefactory didn't do for me was pull out the s52 and put in the s54. They pretty much took care of everything else. I don't want to throw exact numbers out there but Like I said at the very least 10k.
