New pair of e30 coupes

Hi All,

I haven't had an e30 in several years, (had an '87 325e sedan as a beater when an e39 540i 6 spd was my DD) and usually lurk on the e36 forum (I currently use a '99M3 vert and a '94 318iS (both 5 spd) as my DDs)

Fortune smiled on me and I find myself now also owning a couple of e30 coupes for the price of having them towed the 8 or so km to my house. An '82 325i automatic that at first blush seems like it will be the part donor for the other, an '86 325e 5 spd.

It appears my summer project is now to turn these two cars into one decent runner that can replace my 318 when my daughter gets her G2 and I let her take it.

I haven't had a chance to go too deeply into either car yet but a visual inspection (and not liking automatic) would suggest I will try to revive the '86 which only appears to need work on the floor and trunk lid (trunk on the '82 looks OK but I'll probably just put new metal in for the floor...) the '82 fenders look a bit ragged.

When I started to re-educate myself on e30s I read that the bottom end of the e25e can have the top of the 325i "bolted on" for something slightly better than either (but shy on compression unless I shave the head?)

Looking forward to a summer project and hoping some here have built the "327i" engine from an e bottom end and i top end and can help with some guidance when the time comes.

Jamie

auto or manual should not factor into your decision. Work on the car with the least rust and the most solid body. Swapping the manual stuff over to the automatic car is very easy to do, fixing car cancer is not so easy.

LOL true on the car cancer and the fact that with the exception of a few garage queens "clean" is rare... And I'm in Deep River so much tougher winters and way more salt than you Toronto folks for sure.
Just edited a couple typos in my original post. (was still having my morning coffee when I wrote it)

The '86 LOOKS more intact and the documentation I got says it was plated more recently (errr... 2009!) The '84 was intended to be a parts car for it and I walked around them both again at lunch looking and daydreaming and I'm pretty sure the worst parts of the '86 are the best parts of the '84... too bad they're not the same colour but paint wouldn't affect getting it on the road before next fall. Unfortunately it doesn't look like snow and cold are going to go away before late March or even April so real digging into the strengths and weaknesses of the two will remain speculation for a while.

Reading about making a "327i" out of them really peaked my interest...

EDIT: BAH looked the VINs up on 2 more decoders... the 1984 shows up as 325I USA but also lists it as a 2.7L engine... so not actually an I (2.5)??

At the same time it reports as National Version Canada... I'll drive and enjoy it as is... it will be mainly a beater either way I expect.

My "fun money" goes to the e36 M3 anyway.

you are comparing apples and oranges. the market size is 10X that of Canada.
we're a spit in the bucket to bmw in comparison. So the value put on cars in the southern usa is quite different then those put on here. That is why people ship cars up from the south. :-)

Clean is a car which has some surface rust, original unbastardized. They are out there but most aren't selling and if they are they are fetching a prem. those which are mint. are most probably garage queens and owners prob won't sell.

I'd leave it and "e" you would need intake, head, gasket set, dme, wiring harness I believe. maybe a few other things. motor or head doesn't need altering.
