OP, should have shot me a note 2 weeks ago, you missed out on a great 01 that I could have gotten you, manual, silver/blk , 199k with some upgrades for funny money Like (12ish). I drove it personally and it sounded/drove reasonably well.

The red one, I know someone who personally went to look at it;
It's been painted by Ray Charles,
asshole of an owner,
lies through his teeth,
completely firm on his price and the car has been for sale for well over a year.

Anything in the <15K will need something done/be a shitty colour (silver)/higher mileage...etc

^There you go, I knew that red one threw flags for a reason.

Edit: LMAO! It just clicked what you meant by "painted by Ray Charles." For a split second I thought there was a shitty body shop owner by that name.

Hey now! Silver is not a shitty color

You have my number Terry, please do let me know if any well priced M3s come your way.

And can anyone comment on what the crankcase/valvetrain is supposed to look on the S54?

Sluuuuuuuuuudge fears are driving me nuts.

There aren't any big fears. Odds of failure are low and blown out of proportion online. Find the cleanest one in your budget and just buy it...

Well the 2001 Phoenix Yellow M3 vert that I saw this week had a cam gallery looking similar to this, perhaps even a bit worse:

It didn't seem normal, but then again I don't own anything with an S54 yet.

My 13 year old M54 is completely spotless and pristine by comparison.

my old 189 k motor looked like that.i didnt think it looked good but i never took off the valve cover when i bought the car. When I got the 70k motor it look spotless compared to my old motor.keep in mind anything with 189 will look like that.and rod bearings 01 .02 .and 03.will go.

There is no overall year for rod bearing recall, so don't generalize.

Its sorted by assembly code and specific production dates. Plenty of 2001's weren't affected.

Saw that PY vert with Terry in the summer. It was an absolute trainwreck. Disgusting. And that was for 10.5K when an individual owned and not some shitty 3rd party dealer. That car will never sell for 13k to any buyer with functioning eyesight.

You're taking about the one at Dani's auto group, yeah?

That would explain the fresh paint on the bumper, and mint interior. Looks like a LOT of parts have been replaced.

Honestly, it doesn't look half bad in terms of physical condition. But the drivetrain is what concerns me.

Looks like it got touched up. There was rust all over the inside of the rear wheel arches, a broken corner lamp, bolsters and trim had lots of wear. The car looked like a heap asking to be put out of its misery back in the summer. The motor ran strong though.

More like elis garbage cars!
i've read many poor reviews of the customer service and junks vehicles being sold at that lemon stand
i advise you to steer clear.. i jumped when i saw a 10k M3 vert too.. but like most times it was too good to be true..
i had the same goal in mind but i just decided to go 330 cab instead. good luck in your search!

as someone who has a silver car, silver sucks.

that s54 top end looks fine, i'd buy that car. some varnishing on the head is normal for cars with mileage. My summer top end looks like that, a blackstone report for that car is perfect.

the s54 is one of the more bulletproof motors BMW built. get a PPI, and buy with confidence.

all 2001 m3's were affected by the defective rod bearings. not all of them were recalled, not all of them failed, but all of them were affected.
