Chris' e30 v8 project

Hey guys, I've got myself a new project on my hands. Ever since I've started building the e30 racecar, I've wanted to build another one for the street. So finally, I picked this gem up at the beginning of the summer.

Haven't done much too it yet, and wasn't really planning on doing too much. just wanted to clean it up a bit and add a few tasteful mods.

First up was suspension and wheels.

Then had to get rid of the diving boards. The front is easy so I took care of those pretty quickly. Been putting off the rear until this winter.

This is how it sat pretty much all summer

I've always liked the idea of a v8 swap in an e30, and have been thinking about doing it for a little while, but never really committed to searching around for a doner. Until I came across a 540 parts car on this forum and decided to jump on it.

So ideally i'd like to have it running by the beginning of the summer, but we'll see how it goes. We have plans to build another race car this winter, so it's going to be busy!

Good luck man! Just be aware that from what I heard at least, the BMW V8 requires hacking of the strut towers to clear, which is why most people go the LS route - smaller heads (and more power)

Thanks man, yea its more work than I actually thought it would be lol. Frame rails have to be notched, strut tower bracing needs to be cut, Lots of pedal modification etc... I'll make it work though. The finish product will be worth it!

Hoping to get going on this in about a week or so. Right now I just need to source a 530i 5 speed tranny, so if anyone has one, or knows of one for sale, let me know!

Good luck man. I wanted to do this too. I have the 540i/6 just sitting in the back, collecting dust. One day I will find a vert worthy of the swap. Lots of guys have been doing this swap because of how cheap and readily available these motors are now. Last I checked there was lots of good info on google. Garagstic (spelling?) sells kits that make the swap pretty smooth.

Thanks dude. Yea that's the main reason I decided to go this route over the lsx swap. It will end up costing much less since the motors/parts are becoming easier to find. I was planning on building my own motor mounts, but I found the ones on Garagistic for 200$ so I just ended up buying those. Can't go wrong for that price! Lots of good info on their website too.

Chris, would a six speed from an e46 m3 work? I have a friend who may end up with a spare with a balky third gear synchro. Car still works well, just needs a careful shift into third.

It won't bolt up but why bother. E46 M3 transmissions are like catnip to E36 guys so they're badly overpriced. You can get an E39 540i getrag which is the same transmission with the right bellhousing any time for half the price.

Not true. I did it without touching the frame rails or the strut tower bracing and I still have a booster.

Looking back at my swap I would suggest going boosterless and using an aftermarket pedel and master cylinder system. If you are reading Garagstic's info on their website then you will be familiar with their setup.

This has to be the hardest part to find in Canada because there were very few manual trans E34 530's.

This is the first add for one I've seen in 3 years. BUY IT. The 6spd is easier to find but you need the driveshaft and then you need to modify it and that gets pricy. $$$

Good luck with your swap.

I actually have a 5 speed from my 530i. Getting pulled out for a 6 speed swap. If you're really hurting for one. I can pull it out earlier sooner than later.

Ciao!

Thanks guys, I actually just picked up a 6 speed last weekend. Couple of reasons, 1. Much easier to find. 2. Hard to find a good clutch/flywheel setup for a 5-speed that can handle the power. Much more options for the 6-speed and 3. Cool factor of having a 6-speed e30. I also contacted a few shops in Ottawa to get a price to modify the driveshaft and it wont be as bad as I thought.
