Mississauga: Low Insurance Daily Driver

Hi guys.

Moved to Mississauga again to be closer to work and am totally getting bent over on the insurance...my insurance went from 170 comprehensive to 258 comprehensive on the E90 just cause of the damn change in postal code!

Apparently, Mississauga is a 'high collission' area.

Anyway, I cant afford the E90 insurance throughout the year and I plan on storing it from November onwards till next May in my garage. I have about 9k saved up that I can dish out on a daily which I will give to my girlfriend as her regular car next Spring.

Has to be low mileage, auto for sure and a front wheel drive. Does anyone have any recommendations ?

I was thinking about:

1. 2008 Honda Civic 4 door
2. 2006 Honda Accord 4 cylinder
3. 2006/07 Nissan Altima
4. 2005/2006 Toyota Corolla

As long as the mileage is under 120-140k Im happy, just looking for what is cheap on insurance and something easy to fix.

Thanks for the help!

Out of all those, the Nissan is probably your best best in terms of insurance. No maintsream Honda/Toyota will be cheap to insure.

Look into a Mazda 3 as well. The 06/07 GTs are relatively inexpensive, very reliable and cheap to run

You are better off calling your insurance company and getting a quote yourself, everyone's factors are different. What might be cheap for someone else may not even apply to your case.

It really doesn't take long, just call whoever you are insured with and have a few year/make/models ready that you are looking at. Tell them you are car shopping and what to compare rates.

You can rule out the Civic/Corolla. Accord shouldn't be too bad.

Id get some quotes elsewhere even for the e90.

forget the civic/corolla(high cost to cover yourself). they like to use the claims excuse for sauga but thats a joke imo.

anyways a beater to "save" on insurance is flawed thinking. you wont save in the long run in that aspect. keeping miles off the e90 or keeping it in better non winter use shape ok...but any other perceived savings is wrong.

this goes for , cost of gas etc .
The extra insurance cost per month is way less than all the costs incurred for a whole other car.

Also check to make sure your insurance will actually allow you to knock back to fire/theft in the winter. some dont anymore and offer "suspended coverage"...you still get dinged full insurance cost for both cars but then you have to submit a form later to get the money back for time you didnt use it(or something to that effect). how you prove that I dont know.

Apparently we are still too close to Brampton!

But that is still way too high, not sure about your record, but I pay about $140 full coverage on a 540 M-Sport...and even for two cars I am still under $250 and live in Mississauga...

Try get a second opinion...

Milton FTW! $285 a month for 3 cars AND the house...

But seriously, shop around. If you are university grad, try TD Meloche Monnex (NOT regular TD Insurance, this division is for group insurance only). I've always had good rates from them. Call up a few companies, ask for the cars that are rated lowest with them and make a decision from there.

Yeah Im with Meloche Monnex with the university discount. When I was I was in Milton/Burlington I was paying 90 for the E46 before I sold her and 160 for the E90. As soon as I moved to Mississauga the E90 rates just went sky high.

I shopped around using belair/kanetix etc but the rate was just a maximum of 30-50 dollars cheaper. I have 2 tickets that are probably nailing me - one was in 2011 for a 10 over and the other in January 2012 for incorrect HOV use on the good ol QEW.

Since my wife needs a car anyway, I was thinking of getting her one now, and then park the E90 till Spring when I'm hoping one of those tickets will go off the record, plus my current policy will expire so I can shop around then - right now if I cancel, I have to pay a cancellation fee.

I called them and got rates for a 08 Civic - it was 2500 a year on top of what Im paying for the E90, 2580 for a 07 LX Accord, and 2470 for a 07 Altima.

Any ideas? lol

Try The Personal.

My folks were with TD MM since 2000. They were getting hosed at 3500/car. 7K for two 50+ adults with no tickets or claims is absurd. Switched to The Personal and it's only $3600 for BOTH cars in Brampton. Not bad at all.

I found President Choice was underwritten by Scottish & York which I am with for 20 years. When I shopped around PC was cheaper so I called up S&Y and they immediately dropped to match - go figure!

I pay $1200 per year for my 1988 civic sedan through Desjardins, and I live in North york, highest density of cars, supposedly. I heard Bramladesh is the highest in Ontario because of so much fraud !

Thing is though, they may have a point. I've been back in the Winston Churchill/403 area now for about a month -- and almost every day without fail theres a colliission or two in that area.

Cant imagine what a mess it might be in Brampton !

Still, Im pissed about my rates - though I can sort of understand some of it, seeing the morons on the road in the area I moved to....they tailgate, dont blink when changing lanes, cut people off, and worst of all - turn without f$$$kin looking. cant wait to move back to Burlington or Milton in a year or two.
