E46 Aux Install - Weird Question

Hey everyone

I've done an aux install in the past on my e46 in the sunglass tray. Mounted in the rear right corner (hole is on the side of the tray) with no issues. On my current e46, I'm trying to do the same thing but instead mount in the same location but with the hole on the rear of the tray.

My problem is that the plastic seems too thick to properly put the female connector through and screw on the thin nut on the inside that secures the connector. Has anyone else run into this issue? The first car was a 2004 and this one is a 2005 so I'm pretty surprised at this.

Any help would be appreciated - I already have a hole that's a little loose now inside my sunglass tray so I'd like to try to make that work if possible.
