Ok, so lets say I had a clean 740, and no time/ability to do the work myself - could you estimate the all-in cost? Like, I deliver the car to say stancfactory, and a few weeks (months) later I pick it up...I've got to imagine the bill would be enormous, but how enormous?

Very hard to say! The biggest issue is hunting for parts, very time consuming! Might as well get a crashed M5, but even that is hard to find, and expensive. Second problem is the "might as well" issue; you start with one thing, and end up doing ten! You can't just drop a 400Hp motor without getting a new clutch, and brakes, and bushings, and shocks, and all filters, and SO ON, AND ON...
I would say $10-20K easy...depending on who does it, and how much YOU can do.

Exhaust is done, gas tank back on, rotors are ready, just waiting on the calipers for the powder coaters....Leather dash swap on the way.

Just an amazing stable of what's possible with 90s BMWs -- arguably the ultimate and sadly last generation of cars whose engineering is directed toward uncompromising driver experience. Congratulations on what you have accomplished through enthusiasm and, uh, making a life of it, not having the cash to just buy your way in through other pursuits. I say this having only met you a number of times through my own desire to drive these cars without being the stereotypical modern BMW "client" --which your business has facilitated but doesn't give me the insight to speak about your personal situation... I guess my point is-- respect. Nice cars -- dream cars to many of us, in many ways more than mega buck super cars or purpose built race cars (though those are sweet too.)

Cheers. I hope you enjoy the drive.
