Blown 320i e46 Differential?

My friends 320i auto was whining from what he though was radiator fan. Apparently it was the differential as now you can hear grinding. From what it seems a blown diff to this degree is rare. I am wondering if there are good ways to diagnose this over a bad universal joint. I am thinking of removing it and opening the casing, has anyone done so before?

Also, where to go to find a diff. Worried about getting a used diff as may be high mileage or abused. Is it better to get a rebuild? Who rebuilds in GTA and for approx how much. Apparently 320i auto had 3.93 diff which is rare and came in 330i & X3, so I will probably have a hard time finding. What is a good replacement for it?
